Michigan students start #walkwithme campaign in response to recent hate crimes

Posted on February 25, 2015

In an eight-day span in February, crimes were committed across North America against people and places of worship because of their faith.

With this increase in hate crimes and violence, students at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich. became concerned about the potential for rising aggression toward people wearing the hijab, or other religious attire, on their university campus. The #walkwithme project was created as a peaceful response to the recent incidents of hate, ignorance and intolerance.

The creators were inspired by the #illridewithyou hashtag campaign used in Australia that supported Muslims who were fearful of Islamophobic backlash after the siege in Sydney.

This is a great example of how to take initiative on your campus and in your community. We, at the Campaign to TAKE ON HATE, welcome this project and applaud the young people who are leading this peaceful and constructive way to #TAKEONHATE.
